Super contributions calculator

Find the contribution strategy that's right for you

Whether you're starting with a budget or a retirement goal, this calculator can help you determine how much to contribute, understand your options, and explore whether before-tax or after-tax contributions would give you the greatest benefit.

What are the benefits of making additional super contributions?

You can make a huge difference to your super balance and retirement income by making additional contributions to your super. Making additional super contributions means you may be able to reduce your tax whilst simultaneously growing your retirement savings.

These contributions are made on top of the superannuation guarantee (SG) payments your employer makes to your super account. You can also make additional contributions if you’re self-employed.

Our super contributions calculator is designed to help you understand possible contribution scenarios and how they may impact you based on the information you provide.

Additional contributions can be made before or after tax. The type of contribution that may be best suited for you will depend on your circumstances.

Before-tax (concessional) contributions

Concessional contributions, such as salary sacrifice, are generally taxed at 15% when they are received by your super fund. Because this tax rate is lower than the marginal tax rates most Australians pay, making additional concessional contributions may help grow your super and reduce your tax.

Regardless of how contributions are made, money invested in super may benefit from compound returns over time. Earnings within super are also generally taxed at lower rates than investments held outside super.

After-tax (non-concessional) contributions

Non-concessional contributions are made to super from money you’ve already paid tax on, but still may benefit from compound returns over time. The type and amount of contributions that may be right for you will depend on your personal circumstances.
